Waterstop gaskets - an alternative to mortaring concrete structures

Waterstop gaskets can be an overlooked alternative to mortaring a pipe into a manhole or where a rubber boot like our PSX: Direct Drive is just not feasible.

When mortaring in a pipe into a manhole, we definitely do not recommend using one of our manhole connectors.

Why, you ask?

It (the mortar) diminishes the whole purpose of the rubber connector by creating a rigid joint. The connector just cannot flex with the differential settlement when it’s packed with mortar.

It also can restrict someone’s ability to inspect the boot if there is a problem. (We don’t leak, but problems do happen)

What Is A Waterstop Gasket?

Our WS Series Waterstop gasket is simply a rubber ring that is compressed around the pipe using stainless steel clamps for connecting pipes to manhole structures.

The connector is either grouted into an existing structure or has an entirely new structure poured around the pipe with the waterstop gasket already attached.

The wide variety of uses and sizes for the waterstop can be manufactured for:

  • Manholes
  • Wet wells
  • Square pump & lift stations
  • Storm water structures
  • On-site treatment structures
  • Junction chambers
  • Grease interceptors
  • Round, arch and elliptical pipes

The WS 30 Waterstop is one of the most versatile because it can be made to order for pipes ranging anywhere from 8” – 144”. That allows you as an engineer or contractor the ability to add a flexible connector to almost any situation where sealing the pipe entering the manhole is important to you.

Another great feature of the WS Waterstop that is often overlooked is the rubber material. Mortar will rarely, if ever, adhere directly to PVC or HDPE pipes. But it will adhere to our rubber.

And above all of those nifty features, it gives you the added protection of a stronger seal between the structure and the pipe to help prevent water or fines getting in or out at the manhole connection.

So the next time you're in a situation where a resilient rubber connector is required, but you are also being asked to use grout (mortar), consider the WS Series Waterstop Gasket as the superior alternative.
